About the Hospital

Built from converted military barracks in the early 1900s, the city’s first hospital opened its doors on “F” Street in 1923—serving a growing community with limited resources but a strong sense of purpose. In 1978, the building was relocated to the Harlingen Arts and Heritage Museum, where it continues to stand as a physical reminder of the people, progress, and resilience that shaped Harlingen.

Today, that history is at risk.

Why This Building Matters

This is more than an old structure. It represents:

  • The earliest days of healthcare in Harlingen

  • The evolution of the city’s infrastructure and growth

  • The stories of families, workers, and patients who passed through its doors

Without preservation, these stories—and the place that holds them—could be lost.

What Needs to Be Done

To protect and restore the building, several critical repairs are required:

  • New Roof: $50,000

  • Porch Repairs: $20,000

  • Structural Repairs: $5,000

  • New Skirting: $10,000

  • Exterior Painting: $10,000

These improvements will stabilize the building, prevent further deterioration, and allow it to continue serving as an educational and historical asset for the community.
